Summer Baby wearing

As we come into warmer weather many people worry about the over heating baby/toddler. I’d start by reminding us all that people carry babies all over the world, including hot climates (hotter than ours) so it’s definitely possible.

If you baby is old enough it’s worth remembering that hip or back carries are cooler than front carries. If you need a suitable carrier for either of these positions do talk to a sling library.

Some carriers will be warmer than others, some have more layers (stretchies, caboos), some have cooler fabrics or mesh, all things you can consider.

For stretchies, bamboo can be a nice option (stretchy wraps eg Izmi, Hana). There are alternative ways of wrapping that may feel cooler but both stretchies and caboos (look for a caboo lite maybe) always need 3 layers over baby for safety

Ring slings are just one layer over baby, you can also get muslin ones (probably not suitable/comfortable for toddlers)

Woven wraps come in many fabrics and can be tied in ways that there’s only one layer on baby, light fabrics like this gauze one can be great for babies (probably not supportive enough for older children)

Mesh is nice and cool. This mini monkey mini sling is great for short carries and dries off quickly if it gets wet.

Some buckle carries like this Tula Explore have a mesh panel (and our Beco Gemini cool), alternatively find a nice breathable fabric.

This Kahu Sunshine has a UV50 panel (as does the Beco Gemini Cool

However the carrier you have will probably be fine for a British summer, at least 99% of the time! If you are going somewhere hot do hire for the holiday.

There are some obvious self help measures too:

Avoid the hottest times of day

Take plenty of breaks and drink lots of fluids (you and baby)

Walk in the shade where you can

UV umbrellas are an option but a sunhat they can’t take off is important too.  Draping a muslin over the lower part of the carrier can protect legs.

Put sun cream on a little while before going into the carrier to save greasy stains

Choose lightweight clothing for little one

Some people put a muslin between their body and baby

A fan may help

Sometimes a buggy can be a better choice but please don’t drape a cloth over it as this increases the heat inside so could be very dangerous.
